Today there is a different style of yoga class available on almost every corner. What makes it more confusing is that types of yoga are now more like brand names instead of traditional styles. And therapy. What is that?

Yoga therapy is the application of yoga, usually in a one-on-one setting, for people with specific health conditions.

The yoga therapist teaches the client how to re-establish healthy movement patterns to help heal injuries and muscular imbalances, as well as breathing techniques that can reduce pain, anxiety, and facilitate deep relaxation. A yoga therapist might also educate the client on yogic dietary guidelines or healthy lifestyle changes.

YET, YOGA THERAPY IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK. Unlike what you might imagine, you do not need to be healthy, skinny, flexible, athletic, religious, or even spiritual to benefit from yoga therapy. In some cases, you don’t even have to like traditional yoga poses. The yoga therapist may encourage you to continue with an exercise regime you already have in place and add some breathing techniques that are proven to aide in healing.

Today, Western science recognizes that at least 95% of physiological and psychological diseases are either caused by or exacerbated by stress. One of the things that yoga therapy does best is to calm the nervous system, and therefore prevent and even reverse the damaging effects of stress. Yoga therapy is therefore proving effective in helping manage many different health conditions.

Yoga Therapy is a growing field; yoga therapists are not yet licensed with the State, and therefore, it is not “illegal” for someone to title themselves a yoga therapist without being registered with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). When searching for a yoga therapist, though, you might consider whether he/she is credentialed by IAYT (They will have a C-IAYT after their name). An IAYT credentialed yoga therapist will have at least 800 hours of yoga training, and have completed a comprehensive yoga therapy program that emphasizes human anatomy, physiology, and how to manage medical conditions as well as mental health conditions with yoga. In addition, they will have been trained how to interpret x-ray and MRI reports, to name a few, and how to communicate with your physician and complementary health practitioners.
